Documentary Editorial Review

**Editorial Review of "Scanners" (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]** "Scanners," part of The Criterion Collection, is a captivating synthesis of paranoia thriller and horror, unearthed with remarkable clarity in this Blu-ray release. David Cronenberg's masterful direction has created a film that, while notorious for its striking special effects—particularly the infamous 'exploding heads'—offers much more than initial shock value. Viewers are drawn into a world where ordinary actors like Stephen Lack portray characters imbued with an unsettling combination of relatability and suspicion, effectively engaging the audience’s empathy while maintaining an ever-present edge of tension. The film is not just a showcase of gory moments; it encourages viewers to appreciate the deeper themes that permeate its narrative. Many reviewers noted that "Scanners" demands a thoughtful viewing approach, revealing its complexities upon a second glance. The film's pacing and exploration of profound psychological concepts keep audiences invested and thrilled throughout. With strong performances, particularly from Michael Ironside, and a captivating storyline, "Scanners" stands out as a classic of 80s cinema. Viewers have commended this Criterion edition for its superior picture quality, which enhances the film's already striking visual aesthetic. The overall presentation—including artwork and accompanying features—adds to the experience, making it an essential addition for fans of the genre and collectors alike. **
